Garbage Disposers

Garbage Disposers/ Garbage Disposals

It's frustrating to have a kitchen sink that won't drain, yet Dallas garbage disposers are often misused, causing clogs.  A majority of service requests that Metro-Flow Plumbing in Dallas receives involve issues with garbage disposers. A common misconception by most Dallas families is that all garbage can be eliminated in a disposer.

Garbage disposers are designed to handle only light food and residue that is rinsed off from dishes and cookware before they are place into a dishwasher. Handling large quantities of food and debris can overwhelm the appliance and cause a clog to form in the kitchen sink drain.

The day after Thanksgiving, commonly known as “Black Friday”, is the busiest day of the year for Metro-Flow Plumbing in Dallas. A high number of garbage disposers become clogged in this day due to many Dallas residences preparing large meals in their homes. This, in turn, produces a lot of food scraps in one day which can quickly become a big problem.

Troubleshooting a Common Problem:

Problem:   Your garbage disposal sounds like it should be working properly, but does not.

Solution:  First make sure your disposer is switched to the OFF position.  Shine a flashlight into the drain to verify that no foreign objects are in the garbage disposer. Some of these objects may be coins, plastic bread ties, or kitchen utensils. If you have found an object, then again verify that your disposer is OFF and then remove the item using pliers or a similar grasping tool. NEVER put your hand inside a garbage disposer, EVER! This is extremely dangerous and lead to an unfortunate accident.   If the disposal is clear of foreign objects, then press the reset button located on the bottom of the disposer under the sink.  Test the disposer by turning it on. Your disposer may have come with a hex key jam-clearing tool.  It should be kept under the sink or even taped to the disposer unit.  If you have a hex key jam-clearing tool, look for its keyhole at the bottom of your garbage disposer.  Insert the tool and turn it back and forth in order to clear the jam.
